Ryan Roper

Senior Project Engineer

BP

Ryan Roper is a project leader with more than 15 years of experience establishing project frameworks and directing project design, engineering, procurement and construction execution activities in the energy industry.

In his current role, he is responsible for the fabrication and delivery of major equipment packages, equipment installation, and offshore hookup and commissioning activities for an offshore compression facility. Ryan strongly believes that to support these activities, quality plays a crucial role, and his team has utilized AR to conduct 3D model reviews, which in turn allowed them to more readily identify engineering and human factor concerns associated with the design and installation of equipment packages.

AR capability has been especially value-adding prior to, but even more-so, during COVID-19, where remote monitoring capability assisted Ryan’s team in reducing the number of personnel required at vendor’s sites for inspection testing and Factory Acceptance Testing. AR, with remote monitoring capability, also allowed inspectors to view equipment packages at vendors’ facilities and remotely provide visual access to equipment in real time, facilitate questions from a wider cross-section of discipline engineers, and record the entire process for future engineering review or as a teachable recording to young or less experienced engineers.

Augmented Reality certainly provides significant potential value to the energy industry and Ryan’s team has only scratched the surface of the extent to which this technology can be used. The team hopes to build upon their experience on this project to derive further benefits and value from the use of AR.
